Archbishop Fulton Sheen's Spiritual Adoption Prayer

What is Spiritual Adoption?
•  It is a prayer for the child in the womb threatened by abortion.
•  It is a prayer and help to those suffering because of the sin of abortion.
•  It is a movement inspired by the Holy Spirit, as is all which is good in the world and which bears good fruit.

What do we pray?
It is a prayer lasting nine months.  Anyone can start praying and on any day.  The prayer consists of saying:

1.  One decade of the Rosary
     said each day for nine months (you can choose a different one each day or say the same one every day for nine months) and;

2.  Special Daily Prayer:

My Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Your Blessed Mother Mary who gave birth to You out of love
and through the intercession of St Joseph, the man of faith who cared for You after Your Birth, I turn to
You on behalf of this conceived child who has been Spiritually Adopted by me and who is threatened by
abortion.  Please, give to his parents love and courage to allow their child to remain in the womb and
have life, the life that You have given him.  Amen.

How can I start the Spiritual Adoption?
It is recommended that the Spiritual Adoption starts with a formal oath in the presence of God.  If it is said by the priest, the
congregation repeat all the words said by him.  The oath can be said in Church in front of the Blessed Sacrament or at home,
but with a firm commitment to follow it through.
      Oath:
I glorify You the Father Almighty, the Lord of heaven and earth that You have hidden things from
the mighty and wise but have revealed them to the poor.  Yes, Father, this was Your Will.
The
Most Holy Virgin, Mother of God - Mary, all the Angels and Saints, led by the desire of bringing
help to the threatened child in the womb, I ________________ undertake under oath today
__________________ to take under spiritual adoption one child whose name is only known to
God and I undertake to pray for nine months every day for this child to save his life and to obtain
for him Your graces to live a just and true life in You.  I will say:

           •  One decade of the Rosary (Our Father, 10 Hail Mary's and a Glory Be)
           •  Daily prayer
           •  My own undertaking (optional)

I praise You, and I glorify You the Holy Trinity and I thank you for having heard my prayer.  Amen.

What could be 'our own undertaking'?
• Participate in nine month novena - Feast of the Annunciation (March 25th) to Feast of the Holy Family (December 31).
• Frequent confession.
• Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
• Help the needy.
• Volunteer at your local Crisis Pregnancy Centre.

Is it possible to undertake the Spiritual Adoption without 'our own undertakings'?
Yes.  Additional undertakings are not obligatory.

How did the Spiritual Adoption movement start?
The movement started in the wake of Fatima apparitions and have become an answer to Our Heavenly Mother's pleas for Rosary
prayers, reparation and atonement for our sins, the sins that wound her Immaculate Heart most.  This movement reached Poland
in 1987 and the first Centre propagating the Spiritual Adoption was started by the Pauline Fathers in Warsaw, from there the Spiritual
Adoption movement has spread beyond the Polish borders.  In the US, Spiritual Adoption was popularized by Fulton Sheen, who
encouraged the faithful to pray for a preborn child.  Fulton Sheen's Spiritual Adoption prayer can be found at the bottom of this page.

What are the fruits of the Spiritual Adoption?
It is our heartfelt answer that benefits the deep wounds caused by the sin of abortion.  Through the prayers of the faithful God is able
to bestow faith in God's Mercy to the mothers of the unborn giving them peace in their hearts.  The act of Spiritual Adoption is a
personal charitable gift of prayer, love and sacrifice.  Through our own participation in it we are benefiting ourselves, we begin to
meditate on the purpose of the lost sense of asceticism.  Spiritual Adoption will lead us to the re-birth of our own prayer life and love
inside the family.

Who can Adopt Spiritually?
Everyone.  All are called to respond to the needs of each other, of the needs of the communities we live in.  We invite both the
consecrated and the lay people, women and men of all ages.  Children, however, should be encouraged and supervised actively
by their parents.

How many times can I Adopt?
We can adopt many times.

Do I need to undertake each Adoption with an oath?
Yes.

Can I Adopt more than one child at a time?
No.  We Adopt spiritually one child for nine months.

How can I be sure that God will listen to my prayer?
Our faith is based on God Almighty and on His Divine Mercy.  God is the giver of life and it is His Will for each child to have life
and love of his parents.

Am I sinning if I forget to pray?
Forgetting to pray is not a sin, but it is sinful to willfully and consciously neglect to fulfill an undertaking under oath given to God
Almighty.

Is Spiritual Adoption broken if prayers are missed for a prolonged period?
A prolonged absence of prayer (a month or two) breaks Spiritual Adoption.  It is recommended that the undertaking is renewed
and firm commitment kept.  If there has been a short break in prayer the Spiritual Adoption should be continued by the nine
month period extended to cover the days missed out.

Do I have to say my undertaking prayer/oath in Church?
It would be good if the Spiritual Adoption was started with a special mark or ceremony and with the participation of a priest, but
it can equally be made in private.

How can I best start my Spiritual Adoption?
It is recommended that the undertaking prayer is said in front of a crucifix or holy picture/icon.  Also make a note in your diary of
the nine month period covered by your undertaking.

How can I help to spread this Spiritual Adoption?
You can help spread this by:
•  talking to friends and family about it;
•  asking the permission of the Parish Priest to distribute the leaflet (available from Family Life International NZ) and/or to introduce
          this or encourage the spread of it among the faithful;
•  praying for graces for others to start Spiritual Adoption.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen's Spiritual Adoption Prayer

Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much.  I beg you to spare the life of [baby's name] the unborn baby that I
have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion."
